Baroque architecture in Prague I
Baroque is the other most dominant architectural style in Prague apart from Gothic. Culturally baroque architecture in the Czech lands is always associated with loss of national independence and the dominance of the Hapsburg monarchy along with the reinstatement of the Catholic Church.
During the reign of Rudolf II. (1576-1611) Prague had become one of the centres of Northern Mannerist a prelude the Baroque styling.The first Baroque building in Prague and one of the first in the Czech Republic is traditionally considered the Matthias gate at the Prague Castle, built in 1614.
