Under the Emperor Rudolf II, the great patron of alchemy and art, Prague became is the capital of the Hapsburg empire and the seat of its ruler.
In 1583 Rudolf II moved his headquarters to Prague, because Vienna – the traditional capital of the Habsburg dynasty was threatened by the Turks invasions.
Rudolf’s Prague Court flourished as prestigious artists and scientists, but also the various eccentrics, alchemists, charlatans and crooks flocked to Prague.
